When They Go

--by Mike Murray

When they go, they

Take themselves away from us.

But when they go, they

Leave something behind.

When they go, they

Darken our suddenly cold rooms.

But when they go, they

Illuminate our paths to warm comfort.

When they go, they

Deprive us of momentary peace.

But when they go, they

Lead us to eternal contentment.

When they go, they

Take much from the here and now.

But when they go, they

Contribute even more to the sweet hereafter.
